In 1964, ten-year-old Ellen Olcott witnesses her younger brother, Mikey, vanish into an antique mirror in their grandparents' attic. No one believes her. Labeled delusional, she spends her adolescence shuttled between psychiatric facilities.
Twenty years later, Ellen is waiting tables in Fort Wayne, Indiana, still consumed by her brother's disappearance. Recurring nightmares of a man with heterochromatic eyes haunt her at night.
With the help of an unorthodox lucid dream therapist, she uncovers the man's identity. His name is Lucius, her illegitimate uncle, long exiled from the family. He leads Ellen to the attic, where he says he can take her to Mikey. Ellen doesn't trust him, but she doesn't have to. She misses Mikey too much to refuse.
Ellen and her cousin Damian travel with Lucius to a parallel Earth where the Reich never fell, and the sub-viable are harvested to extend the lives of the healthy. They reunite with Mikey, who now goes by Michael. He works as an enforcer for the regime. Ellen quickly learns that finding her brother and rescuing him are not the same. To save Mikey, her long-lost brother, she must confront Michael, the man he has become.
