The Silvering
In 1964, ten-year-old Ellen Vachon witnesses her younger brother, Mikey, disappear through an antique mirror in their grandfather's attic. For twenty years, she is haunted by Mikey's disappearance and visions of the attic. Recurring nightmares of a man with heterochromatic eyes plague her in her sleep.
With the help of an unorthodox lucid dream therapist, she uncovers the man's identity. His name is Lucius, her illegitimate uncle, long exiled from the family. He leads Ellen to the attic, where he says he can take her to Mikey. Ellen doesn't trust him, but she doesn't have to. She misses Mikey too much to refuse.
Ellen and her cousin Damian travel with Lucius to a parallel Earth where the sub-viable are harvested to extend the lives of the healthy. They reunite with Mikey, who now goes by Michael. He works as an enforcer for the regime. Ellen quickly learns that finding her brother and rescuing are not the same. To save Mikey, her longlost brother, she must confront Michael, the man he has become.
